Gas alternatives

Hybrid cars have soared in popularity recently, but you could be in for a wait. Fans of the Toyota Prius, the nation’s No. 1 selling hybrid, will have to wait one year to get their own at Jim Barkley Toyota in Asheville. Customers looking for a hybrid model of the Honda Civic or Accord may not have a long wait at AppleTree Honda in Fletcher. Some models were in stock Tuesday, but models with specific colors and amenities may take 30 to 60 days to arrive. Honda Insights are available only through special order. Visit www.hybridcars.com.

Watching for gas drive-offs

Asheville Police Department Spokesman John Dankel said local law enforcement hasn’t noticed an increase in drive-offs, when someone gases up and leaves without paying. Yet. “It’s probably reasonable to expect that if gas goes up suddenly as much as people are saying — like on the order of 20 to 25 cents in coming weeks — that it might lead to an increase in incidents like this,” Dankel said. If caught, you could be charged with a misdemeanor and lose your driver’s license.
“It’s a lot of risk for a $20 theft,” he said.

Try carpooling

In Asheville, plans are underway to formalize carpooling networks via www.sharetheridenc.com. It helps North Carolina commuters find others who have similar work hours and destinations.

Save gas

Here are some tips to help you save gas:


• AAA Carolinas says underinflated tires can reduce fuel economy by as much as 2 percent per pound of pressure below the recommended level.
• Rapid accelerating,
tailgating and waiting until the last minute to slow down will reduce fuel economy.
• Loading up a car’s roof rack can reduce mileage 10 percent to 20 percent in highway driving because of the increased wind resistance.

Biodiesel

"On the Road Again” means something new for Willie Nelson these days — a chance for truckers to fill their tanks with clean-burning biodiesel fuel.

Nelson and three business partners recently formed a company called Willie Nelson’s Biodiesel that is marketing the fuel to truck stops. The fuel, called BioWillie, is made from vegetable oils, mainly soybeans, and can be burned without modification to diesel engines.
