A landmark book by the author of nine #1 national nonfiction bestsellers. Plan of Attack is the definitive account of a turning point in history as President George W. Bush, his war council, and allies launch a preemptive attack on Iraq, toppling Saddam Hussein and taking over the country. From in-depth interviews and documents, Bob Woodward provides an authoritative narrative of the Administration’s behind-the-scenes maneuvering over two years and examines the causes and consequences of the most controversial war since Vietnam.

What emerges is an astonishingly intimate portrait of the President, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, CIA Director George Tenet, General Tommy Franks, other members of the war council and the White House staff, as well as key foreign leaders ranging from British Prime Minister Blair to Russian President Putin.

Plan of Attack relates the how and the why of decisionmaking-including the secret meetings, secure phone calls, strategies, dilemmas, conflicts, and the raw emotions of war as they are rarely seen in contemporary history.

A few highlights include:

· The Cheney Index:  Cheney's income from Halliburton:

$36,086,635; size of his retirement package ($20 million not

including the stock options); minimum size of "accounting

irregularity" that occurred while Cheney was CEO:  $234 million;

number of the 7 official US "state sponsors of terror" that

Halliburton contracted with:  3 out of 7 (Iraq, Iran, and Libya);

number of energy corporations identified that helped Cheney's Energy

Task Force shape national energy policy:  30.

· Condoleeza Rice was on Chevron's board of directors during

brutal attacks on Nigerians against protestors against Chevron's

pollution of drinking water, degradation of the environment, and

corporate exploitation of local resources and people.  In an

interview with FOX News, she said "I'm very proud of my association

with Chevron and I think we should be very proud of the job that

American oil companies are doing in exploration abroad, in

exploration at home, and in making certain that we have a safe energy

supply."

· Crony connections—Goodman lists companies cashing in on

Iraq's misery, highlighting their campaign contributions, past

abuses, crony connections and surging stock value.

· Clear description of US government and large media

corporations to smother any other opinion besides that which supports

the war.  She also tells of how reporters in other countries have

protested their government's efforts to limit information.  For

example, when the US murdered Al-Jazeera's Tareq Ayyoub, Americans

blamed the victim.  In other countries foreign reporters went on

strike.  Spanish reporters refused to record the words of the Spanish

prime minister who joined Bush and Blair.  When he came into

parliament for a press meeting, they piled their equipment at the

front of the room and turned their backs on him.  Later hundreds of

journalists, camera men, and technicians marched on the US embassy in

Madrid, stopped traffic and changed "Murderer, murderer."  The

Egyptian newspaper, Al-Ahrar called the attack a "massacre."  In

Mexico, El Universal declared it a front-page story:  "The US is now

murdering journalists."

· A study by the Project for Excellence in Journalism of 40.5

hours of prime-time coverage spread over 3 days by ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN

and FOX examined 108 reports from embedded reporters.  Not a single

story depicted people hit by weapons.
